Membership types
Define the memberships your club offers — price, billing and duration.
Membership types are the memberships your organisation offers — for example "Adult playing member", "Junior", "Social member" or "Life member". Each type sets its own price, how it bills, and how long a membership lasts. Members pick a public type when they join, and the type appears on their member record and digital membership card.
Who can use this
Admins, and moderators who hold the members.manage permission. See Roles & positions for how permissions are granted.
On the free plan you can have up to 3 active membership types; paid plans are unlimited.
What's on the page
- The membership types list — every type you've defined, with its price, billing style, duration, visibility and how many members currently hold it. Use the filters to see archived or hidden types.
- The Card column — shows each type's digital membership card at a glance: a colour swatch when the type has its own card design, or "Club branding" when it uses your club's default look. The card icon on each row jumps straight to that type's card design.
- New membership type — creates a type.
- Selecting a type opens its editor; the archive button on each row retires a type without losing history.
Step by step
Create a membership type
- Select New membership type.
- Give it a name members will recognise, and an optional description for the join page.
- Set the price — use 0 for a free membership. The currency is pre-selected from your payment settings (or your club's country), and you can change it per type.
- Choose how it bills: one-off (members renew manually when it runs out), auto-renewing (an ongoing subscription), or member chooses at checkout.
- Choose how long it lasts: one year from payment, a set number of months, or until the season ends — for season types, enter the season end date and roll it forward each season.
- Choose visibility: public types appear on your join page; hidden types can only be assigned by an admin (handy for life members or committee memberships).
- Select Create membership type.
Assign a type to a member
Open the member from the Members page and choose the type in the Membership card. Assigning a type doesn't charge anyone — payments happen when the member joins or renews online, or when you record a payment manually.
Sell memberships online
Online membership payments (including auto-renewal) require the Standard plan — on the Free plan, paid checkout is refused with a friendly message, though free ($0) types still complete and you can always record cash, cheque and bank-transfer payments manually.
Public types appear automatically on your join page at /join on your club site. Visitors sign in (or create an account), complete your membership application if they haven't already, and pay by card. Payment lands in your connected payment account (set up under Member payments), the member's paid-until date extends automatically, and they receive an email receipt. Members can review their status, payment history and auto-renewal any time from My membership in their account.
Auto-renewing types start an ongoing card subscription: each renewal charge extends the member's paid-until date again, failed renewal payments notify the member and your admins, and members can stop auto-renewal themselves from their account (they stay financial until their paid-up date).
Sell memberships through registration forms
Clubs that sign families up through registration forms can link the two: a form can grant a membership type (paying the form links the type to the payer's member record and their paid-until date follows the type's duration), or offer a choice of types per person so each family member picks Junior, Senior or Social at checkout and is priced from the type. Either way, digital cards, member event pricing and roster filters work exactly as if the member had paid on the join page. Buying a type on the join page also satisfies any open required registration for a form that grants or offers that type. The join page additionally lists any registrations the club has asked the member to complete.
Renewal reminders
The Renewal reminders card at the bottom of the page controls automatic expiry emails. Choose how many days before expiry to remind members (for example 30 and 7), and whether to send a final "your membership has lapsed" nudge afterwards. You can customise the subject and message with the {{name}}, {{club}}, {{expiry_date}} and {{renew_url}} placeholders. Reminders send once per member per expiry date — renewing re-arms them for the next cycle.
Digital membership cards
Every active member gets a digital membership card at My membership → View membership card in their account — showing your club name, their name, membership type, member ID, status and paid-until date, plus a QR code. Scanning the QR opens a live verification page: it always shows the member's current status, so an expired card can't be presented as valid. Members can save the card to their phone (and to Google Wallet where the platform has wallet credentials configured).
Card design lives in the type editor: open a type from the list (or use the card icon in its row's Card column) and scroll to the Card design card. On the Pro plan you can give each membership type its own design; other plans use your club branding automatically. The designer offers:
- Themes — a gallery of ready-made looks (Classic, Credit card, Black card, Gold, Platinum, Ocean, Sunset, Aurora and more). Selecting one fills in every setting below; you can then tweak anything.
- Background — a solid colour, a two- or three-colour gradient (with a direction slider), or an uploaded photo. Photos are darkened slightly so the card text stays readable, and the base colour shows while the photo loads and on the Google Wallet pass.
- Finish — an optional decorative layer over the background: sheen, waves, circles, a diagonal band, pinstripes, dots or a glow.
- Labels and Text colours for the card's small headings and main text.
The live preview shows exactly what members will see, and Reset to club branding removes the custom design. The list's Card column shows which types have a custom design.
Retire a type
Archive it from the list. Archived types can't be purchased or assigned, but members who hold them keep their membership and history. Restore an archived type at any time (the free-plan cap still applies).

Tips & FAQ
- Changing a price never re-bills existing members. New prices apply the next time someone purchases or renews.
- Season types suit winter/summer sports. Set the season end date once and everyone who pays during the season is financial until that date, matching how registration forms handle season end.
- Use hidden types for honorary memberships so they never show on your public join page.
