Templates & regions

Templates and regions: add sections that repeat across your site: before or after the content of every news post, event, team and programme, above your "page not found" message, in a shared sidebar beside every news post, event, team and programme, and in a band above the footer on every page. Each one is edited, scheduled and published in the page editor like any page, and shows nothing until it is published.

Templates & regions let you add sections that repeat across your site, without copying them onto every page. You'll find it under Website management → Templates & regions in the admin sidebar, just below Pages.

Use it for things like a "Join the club" call to action under every news post, a note about parking under every event, a sponsor strip above the footer, or an acknowledgement of country on every page.

Who can use this

Admins and moderators, the same people who can edit pages. Members can't see this screen.

What's on the page

One row for each slot, with where it shows, its status and an Edit (or Create) button.

SlotWhere it shows
News post: before/afterUnder the title of every news post, and under its content above "More news".
Event: before/afterUnder the event's summary, and at the end of the event page.
Team: before/afterUnder the team's name, and at the end of the team page.
Programme: before/afterUnder the programme's details, and at the end of the programme page.
Page not foundAbove the "Page not found" message on your site.
Shared sidebarBeside every news post, event, team and programme.
Pre-footer bandAbove the footer on every page of your public site.

The built-in content of a news post, event, team or programme doesn't change. Your sections go around it.

Step by step

Add sections to a slot

  1. Select Create (or Edit) on the slot's row. The slot opens in the page editor.
  2. Add sections just as you would on any page: text, images, buttons, sponsor lists, upcoming events and so on.
  3. Select Publish. The sections now show everywhere that slot appears.

Take a slot down

Open it with Edit and unpublish it in the page editor, or remove its sections and publish again. A slot with nothing published in it shows nothing.

Show a slot to members only

Open the slot and change its visibility in the page settings, or set the visibility of individual sections. Visitors who aren't members then don't see them, the same as on any page.

Tips & FAQ

  • Why doesn't the shared sidebar show on my own pages? Pages you build in the page editor keep their own sidebar setting, so the shared sidebar only appears beside news posts, events, teams and programmes. To give one of your own pages a sidebar, add sidebar sections to that page in the page editor.
  • Can visitors open a slot as a page? No. Slots have no web address of their own, so they're left out of your navigation menus, site search, sitemap and the public API.
  • Do versions, scheduling and locks work? Yes. Each slot is edited in the page editor, so version history, scheduled publishing, section visibility, section locks and saved sections all work as they do on a page.
  • Can I rename or move a slot? No. Its address is fixed so your site can find it. You can change everything inside it.
  • What happens to the "Page not found" page? It now uses your site's header, footer and colours. Anything you publish in the Page not found slot appears above the standard message and its links.
  • I deleted a slot by mistake. Select Create on its row. It comes back as it was when you deleted it, including whether it was published.
