Find and replace

Find and replace: search every page, news post and event for words or a link address (plain text, at least 3 characters, match case and whole-word options), see each match in context, tick the ones to change and replace them in one go. Pages are changed in their unsaved draft for you to check and publish; news posts and events are saved straight away. Locked sections and words that cross formatting are left alone and listed. "Fix everywhere" on a broken link in the page health check opens it with that link filled in.

Find and replace searches your whole website for a word, a phrase or a link address, and changes the matches you pick. Use it when your club changes its name, a sponsor changes theirs, a coach leaves, or an old web address needs pointing somewhere new. You'll find it under Website management → Find and replace in the admin sidebar.

It searches every page, news post and event. For a page, it searches the unsaved draft if there is one, and the current version if not.

Who can use this

Admins and moderators can search and replace. Changing a news post also needs permission to publish news, which admins and moderators have unless your club has changed it.

What's on the page

  • Search box: choose Words or A link address, type what to find and select Search.
  • Options: Match case and Whole words only for words; Every link starting with this for links.
  • Results: one panel per page, news post or event, with each match shown in its sentence and highlighted. Each match has a tick box.
  • Replace with: the new words, or the new link address, and Replace selected.

Step by step

Replace words

  1. Choose Words and type at least 3 characters, such as your club's old name.
  2. Tick Match case or Whole words only if you need them, then select Search.
  3. Tick the matches you want to change. Select all that can be replaced ticks every match that can be changed here.
  4. Type the new words in Replace with. Leave it empty to delete the words.
  5. Select Replace selected, read the summary and select Yes, replace.
  6. Open each page listed under Review and publish, select Restore draft, check it and publish.
  1. Choose A link address and paste the old address, such as /old-page or https://old-site.example.
  2. A page on your own site is found however it was written: /about, /group/your-club/about or your own domain's full address.
  3. To move every link on an old domain, tick Every link starting with this and type just the start, such as https://old-site.example. The rest of each address is kept.
  4. Type the new address and select Replace selected.

When the page health check in the page editor finds a link to a page that doesn't exist, select Fix everywhere. Find and replace opens with that link already searched for, across the whole site.

Tips & FAQ

Can I use wildcards or patterns? No. The search is plain text: characters like * and . are matched exactly as you type them. It needs at least 3 characters.

Why can't I tick some matches? Three reasons. The section is locked against editing. The words cross a formatting change, for example half of them are bold, so they have to be changed in the editor. Or someone else has unsaved changes on that page, and replacing would overwrite their work.

Why was something skipped? If a page, news post or event changed after you searched, it's skipped so you don't overwrite a change you haven't seen. Search again and try once more. The same happens if the new words are too long for a field such as a button label.

Does words mode change web addresses? No. Words mode only changes words people read. To change where a link goes, use A link address.

Is the old version kept? Yes. Pages are changed in a draft, so the published version stays in the page's version history. News posts and events are saved like any other edit.

What about saved sections? A synced section is edited once in its own editor, under Templates & regions, and isn't searched here.

Is it recorded? Yes. Each replacement is recorded in your organisation's activity log with how many items and matches changed. The words themselves aren't stored.
