Looking for a Spond alternative?

Credit where it is due. Spond's core app is free — really free, with no subscription for it — and its RSVP and attendance experience is about as polished as this category gets. The guardian messaging and safeguarding work is thoughtfully done. If your teams need training invites, availability and a group chat that people actually read, Spond is an excellent choice, and you should feel no pressure to leave it.

Spond started as an app, not a website platform. Since our July 2026 check it has added a club website to Spond Club, as a paid extra after a free trial: A$22, £19 + VAT or €15 a month, with customisable designs and a custom domain (checked 5 October 2026). What we did not find, in July, was a shop or a club-level administration suite behind it. Clubs come looking for something else when the club — not just its teams — needs a front door: a site that turns up in a search, self-serve registration with payment attached, and admin the whole committee can share.

So this is not a page about price. Both platforms let you start free. It is a page about what happens when the thing that needs running is bigger than a team. Everything below about Spond comes from public information checked on 24 July 2026.

What Spond is genuinely good at

Attendance, first. Getting a straight answer out of thirty parents about a Tuesday training session is the least glamorous job in club sport, and Spond has spent years making it painless — invites, availability, reminders, a clear picture of who is coming. It is the benchmark, and we say so internally as well as here.

The rest follows from being app-first and free. Native iOS and Android apps with a lot of members already on them. Group messaging with genuine guardian and safeguarding thinking behind it, which matters in junior sport more than any feature list suggests. And no subscription for the core app: Spond is free to use and makes its money from payment processing when clubs collect fees, and from its Superdraw fundraising product, where the club keeps 65% of ticket sales according to its own site (as at July 2026). For a club whose needs stop at organising teams, that is a very good deal and no comparison table changes it.

What you get with ClubHelix that you would otherwise bolt on

A website you actually build. The canvas page editor edits your site on the site itself, with autosaved recovery drafts and no separate preview to guess at. Themes carry your colours, fonts and button styles, templates give you a starting point, and custom domains mean the address belongs to the club.

Membership as a database. Applications, approvals, dues status, membership types, custom fields, renewal reminders before someone lapses, digital membership cards with live QR verification and wallet passes, and a bulk import with duplicate detection and a dry-run preview.

Communication from your own address. Broadcasts go out from your club domain with your own DKIM sending identity. Member chat, SMS and push cover the fast stuff, and RSVPs and attendance sit against the member record rather than beside it.

Match day. Fixtures, ladders, finals series, a live match centre and match officials for competitions you run. If your association runs the competition elsewhere and publishes a feed, show its ladder and fixtures on your own site instead.

Commerce under one roof. A club shop with a tax engine, tickets with member pricing, donations, raffles, discount codes and waitlists, settling into your own Stripe or Square account, with treasurer exports and an optional Xero sync behind them.

The jobs nobody volunteers for. Court, arena and facility booking — paid by card or at the venue, with what is owed tracked — term enrolment, volunteer rostering, incident reporting, accreditation and working-with-children expiry tracking, digital waivers, and governance meetings with agendas and minutes.

Committee-grade control. Roles, council positions and per-person permission overrides; a report catalogue with CSV and PDF exports; a read-only API and daily encrypted backups; an audit log of who changed what; Helix Assistant inside the admin; and a done-for-you service if it is more than your volunteers have time for.

Some of these switch on per plan or per module, so check pricing rather than assuming it all sits on the free tier.

Where Spond may still be the better call

Attendance is the whole job. If what you need is invites, availability and a group chat, Spond does it beautifully and free. Adding a platform around that would be paying for rooms you never walk into.

Your members expect an app-store app. We ship a progressive web app that installs to the home screen in two taps and sends push notifications, not an App Store or Google Play listing. If your members will only accept the latter, Spond has the advantage.

Guardian messaging matters more than anything else on your list. Junior clubs with strict safeguarding expectations should test this side of both products carefully rather than take either of our words for it.

Your governing body already runs the rest. If registration, fixtures and results are mandated elsewhere and your club takes no money of its own, a free team organiser plus the mandated rails may genuinely be enough.

Where ClubHelix fits

ClubHelix is for the club rather than the team. If a family who has never met you needs to find you, read about you and join in one sitting, that happens on a website. Spond now sells one as a monthly add-on to an app-first product; on ClubHelix the website is the product, with membership, payments and the admin built around it. If money moves through the club, if a treasurer needs to see who has paid without exporting anything, if there is merchandise, a canteen roster, a raffle or a set of waivers to keep, then you are describing a club platform.

The other half of it is continuity. Group chats belong to whoever set them up. Roles, positions, permissions and an audit log mean the club's knowledge lives in the platform and survives the October handover, rather than sitting on one volunteer's phone.

We are not claiming to beat Spond at attendance, and we would not ask you to switch for that. The case for ClubHelix is that the website, the roster, the money and the compliance sit in one place, with RSVPs attached to the member record instead of living in a separate app.

Switching from Spond

Export your groups first. Get your member and guardian details out to a spreadsheet, tidy the columns, then run it through the bulk import — it detects duplicates and previews the result before writing anything.

Build the site before you announce it. Start from a site template, then put your own words and photos in with the canvas editor. Nothing is public until you publish.

Point your domain when you are ready. If the club already owns one, connect it on a paid plan. If it does not, register one in the club's name first — advice we would give you whoever you choose.

Move the teams last. Website, membership and payments first; keep team chat where it is for a season if that is easier, then bring RSVPs and chat across once people know their way around.

Yes, and many clubs run exactly that way while they transition — ClubHelix for the website, membership and payments, Spond for team-level invites — then consolidate later. ClubHelix has RSVPs, attendance, member chat and push notifications when you are ready.

Is ClubHelix free like Spond?

There is a free tier, and it is a real one rather than a trial. It is not the same bargain, though: Spond charges no subscription for its core app and earns from payment processing and fundraising, with its club website a paid monthly add-on (checked October 2026), while our paid plans are published on a 28-day cycle and carry the features most clubs switch for. Does ClubHelix have a native app in the app stores?

No. Members install your site to their home screen in two taps and it opens full screen in your club's branding, with push notifications and membership cards including Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes. There is no app-store listing, and Spond has a genuine advantage there.

Can we move our member data across?
