If you're comparing Pitchero and Spond, you've probably noticed something odd: most of the comparisons you'll find online are written by one of the two companies, or by affiliate sites paid per click. The short version up front: Pitchero and Spond are not really the same kind of product. Pitchero is a club website platform that grew membership, payments and team tools around it. Pitchero is the long-standing grassroots standard here: a hosted club website with membership, online payments, branded mobile apps and deep team-stats tooling, with league and fixture feed integration from its football and rugby heritage. It's based in Leeds, built around our vernacular and our season, and priced in pounds. Thousands of grassroots clubs run their public web presence on it — if you've ever looked up a village rugby club, odds are you've landed on a Pitchero site.
Spond is a free club and team organiser from Oslo, dominant across the Nordics and strong across Europe. It's app-first: events, availability, RSVPs, guardian-safe messaging and payment collection, all in a polished mobile experience, with a club-level admin layer (Spond Club) on top of the team apps. There's no subscription at all — Spond makes its money on payment processing and on its Superdraw fundraising product, where clubs keep 65% of ticket sales.
It has serious traction here, so there's a good chance a coach at your club is already running a team on it — which makes club-wide adoption unusually easy.
A note on vernacular: both products speak your language here. Pitchero's "subs", "fixtures" and "pitch" are exactly what your members already say, and Spond's terminology is neutral enough to sit alongside it without friction.

Pricing, honestly
Pitchero publishes three tiers: Free, Standard at £38 per month, and Pro at £99 per month, with 30-day trials and discounts for annual billing. The Free plan doesn't include online payments; on paid plans, payment processing fees run from 2.42% + 17p on Standard down to 1.67% + 15p on Pro. So the real cost of Pitchero for a club collecting money is the subscription plus the transaction rate your tier earns — bigger clubs on Pro effectively buy a better payment rate.
Spond costs nothing to subscribe to — genuinely, there's no paid tier to upsell you to. The commercial model is transaction-side: Spond takes processing fees when you collect payments through it, and its Superdraw fundraising product pays clubs 65% of ticket sales, with the balance being Spond's side of the deal. For a club that mostly needs organising and messaging, and collects little money through the app, Spond can be close to free in practice. If you plan to collect a lot of money through it, do your own sums on the processing side rather than assuming free means free.
Neither model is sneaky — they're just different. Pitchero charges you directly and transparently by tier; Spond charges the money that flows through it.
Where Pitchero wins
- You need a real public website. This is the decisive difference. Spond has no public club website; Pitchero is one, with membership, news, team pages and payments hung off it. If a prospective member googling your club needs to find something you control, Pitchero does a job Spond simply doesn't attempt.
- League and fixture integration. Pitchero's football and rugby heritage means fixture and league feeds from the relevant bodies flow into club sites — a genuine time-saver for UK clubs in those sports.
- Team stats. Fifteen-plus years of match stats tooling. If your club culture runs on appearance records and top-scorer tables, Pitchero has depth here that a comms app doesn't.
- One system for the whole club. Website, membership database, payments and team admin under one login, rather than a comms app plus a separate website plus a separate membership tool.
Where Spond wins
- Price. No subscription at all versus £38–£99 a month is a serious argument for a small club, full stop.
- The weekly organising loop. Availability, RSVPs, reminders, "who's coming Saturday" — Spond's flows here are, in our honest view, the best in the category, and it's the main reason the app has spread so widely on word of mouth.
- Messaging that parents trust. Guardian-linked accounts and safeguarding-conscious messaging design make Spond an easy sell to a junior club worried about coaches messaging kids directly.
- Zero-friction adoption. Free, app-first, and parents may already have it from another child's team. There's no procurement decision to argue about at committee.
So which should your club pick?
Our honest referee's call:
- Pick Pitchero if the club's public face is the priority — you want a proper website, online membership and payments, league feeds and stats, and you're prepared to pay a monthly subscription for it. It's the more complete club system of the two.
- Pick Spond if the weekly organising is the priority — you need availability, RSVPs and safe messaging working by this weekend, at no cost, and your web presence is either sorted already or genuinely not a priority yet.
- Plenty of clubs run both — Spond for the team-level week-to-week, a website platform for the public face and membership money. That's a legitimate answer too; just go in knowing you're maintaining two systems and two member lists.
The pattern we'd push back on gently: adopting Spond because it's free and then never solving the website and membership side. A free comms app is not a club platform, and clubs that leave their public face to a stale social page pay for it in lost sign-ups.
