What this guide answers

  1. Is Spond really free?

The organiser is: events, availability, messaging and payment collection carry no subscription.

  2. Does Spond give my club a website?

It can now, for a fee. When we re-checked in October 2026, Spond sold a Club Website as a Spond Club feature, with customisable designs and your own domain, at £19 + VAT a month (A$22, C$24 or €15) after a free trial.

  3. How much does Pitchero cost?

As at July 2026, Pitchero publishes a Free plan, Standard at £38 per month and Pro at £99 per month, with 30-day trials and annual-billing discounts.

  4. Can a club use both Pitchero and Spond?

Yes, and many do — Spond for team-level availability and messaging, Pitchero (or another website platform) for the public site, membership and payments.

  5. Do Pitchero and Spond work for clubs here?

Both function, but neither is built for this market. Pitchero prices in pounds by default, uses UK club vernacular throughout, and supports on UK hours; Spond's centre of gravity is the Nordics and its payment tooling…

If you're comparing Pitchero and Spond, you've probably noticed something odd: most of the comparisons you'll find online are written by one of the two companies, or by affiliate sites paid per click. Spond even publishes its own "Spond v Pitchero" page. So here's our attempt at a genuinely fair one — written by a third platform (we're ClubHelix, an all-in-one club platform, and we'll declare that interest properly near the end), refereeing the two on their merits.

The short version up front: Pitchero and Spond are not really the same kind of product. Pitchero is a club website platform that grew membership, payments and team tools around it. Spond is a free team communication and organisation app that grew payment collection and fundraising around it. Plenty of clubs run one of each. The right question isn't "which is better" — it's "which job do you need done first?"

Everything below is based on public information current as at July 2026, with pricing and the website question re-checked against both companies' own pages in October 2026. Both products change frequently, so treat this as a well-researched starting point, verify anything decision-critical on their own sites, and if you spot something we've got wrong, tell us via our contact page and we'll fix it.

What each platform actually is

Pitchero is the long-standing UK grassroots standard: a hosted club website with membership, online payments, branded mobile apps and deep team-stats tooling, with league and fixture feed integration from its football and rugby heritage. It's based in Leeds and sells in several currencies as well as pounds. The catch for a club here is that its vernacular ("subs", "fixtures", "pitch") and support hours are built for a market five to eight hours ahead of you, and it knows nothing about league-mandated background screening.

Spond is a free club and team organiser from Oslo, dominant across the Nordics and strong across Europe. It's app-first: events, availability, RSVPs, guardian-safe messaging and payment collection, all in a polished mobile experience, with a club-level admin layer (Spond Club) on top of the team apps. The organiser itself carries no subscription. Spond makes its money on payment processing, on its Superdraw fundraising product, where clubs keep 65% of ticket sales, and on a paid Club Website add-on for Spond Club (found when we re-checked in October 2026).

Its presence here is far smaller than TeamSnap's, so expect to be introducing it rather than adopting something families already have installed — and check the payment side carefully, since its collection tooling was built for European banking first.

A note on vernacular, since Pitchero is a UK product: expect "subs" rather than dues or registration fees, "fixtures" rather than schedule, and "pitch" rather than field. None of it is unusable, but it is one more thing every new volunteer has to translate. Spond's terminology is neutral enough to travel well.

Pricing, honestly

Pitchero publishes three tiers: Free, Standard at £38 per month, and Pro at £99 per month, with 30-day trials and discounts for annual billing. The Free plan doesn't include online payments; on paid plans, payment processing fees run from 2.42% + 17p on Standard down to 1.67% + 15p on Pro. So the real cost of Pitchero for a club collecting money is the subscription plus the transaction rate your tier earns — bigger clubs on Pro effectively buy a better payment rate.

Spond's organiser costs nothing to subscribe to. The one paid line we found in October 2026 is its Club Website, a Spond Club add-on at £19 + VAT a month (A$22, C$24 or €15) after a free trial. Otherwise the commercial model is transaction-side: Spond takes processing fees when you collect payments through it, and its Superdraw fundraising product pays clubs 65% of ticket sales, with the balance being Spond's side of the deal. For a club that mostly needs organising and messaging, and collects little money through the app, Spond can be close to free in practice. If you plan to collect a lot of money through it, do your own sums on the processing side rather than assuming free means free.

Neither model is sneaky — they're just different. Pitchero charges you directly and transparently by tier; Spond charges the money that flows through it, plus the website add-on if you take it.

Where Pitchero wins

  • You want the website to be the centre of the club. This used to be a straight "site versus no site" difference, and it has narrowed. Pitchero is a website platform, with membership, news, team pages and payments hung off it. Spond now sells a Club Website as a paid add-on to Spond Club, with customisable designs and your own domain (checked October 2026). So the real choice is a website-first platform against a website added to an organiser. We haven't assessed the depth of Spond's site, so build a test page on both before you decide.
  • League and fixture integration. Pitchero's football and rugby heritage means fixture and league feeds from the relevant bodies flow into club sites — a genuine time-saver for UK clubs in those sports.
  • Team stats. Fifteen-plus years of match stats tooling. If your club culture runs on appearance records and top-scorer tables, Pitchero has depth here that a comms app doesn't.
  • One system for the whole club. Website, membership database, payments and team admin under one login, rather than a comms app plus a separate website plus a separate membership tool.

Where Spond wins

  • Price. A free organiser, plus £19 + VAT a month only if you want its website, against £38–£99 a month for Pitchero's paid tiers is a serious argument for a small club.
  • The weekly organising loop. Availability, RSVPs, reminders, "who's coming Saturday" — Spond's flows here are, in our honest view, the best in the category, and it's the main reason the app has spread so widely on word of mouth.
  • Messaging that parents trust. Guardian-linked accounts and safeguarding-conscious messaging design make Spond an easy sell to a junior club worried about coaches messaging kids directly.
  • Zero-friction adoption. Free, app-first, and parents may already have it from another child's team. There's no procurement decision to argue about at committee.

So which should your club pick?

Our honest referee's call:

  • Pick Pitchero if the club's public face is the priority — you want a proper website, online membership and payments, league feeds and stats, and you're prepared to pay a monthly subscription for it. It's the more complete club system of the two.
  • Pick Spond if the weekly organising is the priority — you need availability, RSVPs and safe messaging working by this weekend, at no cost, and your web presence is either sorted already or genuinely not a priority yet.
  • Plenty of clubs run both — Spond for the team-level week-to-week, a website platform for the public face and membership money. That's a legitimate answer too; just go in knowing you're maintaining two systems and two member lists.

The pattern we'd push back on gently: adopting Spond because it's free and then never solving the website and membership side. A free comms app is not a club platform, and clubs that leave their public face to a stale social page pay for it in lost sign-ups. See our guide on what a club website needs to do for why that surface matters.

The third option: an all-in-one club platform

Here's our declared interest, and we'll keep it honest. ClubHelix is an all-in-one club platform: a real public website with a drag-and-drop canvas page editor and your own domain, member registration and payments, plus the Spond-shaped weekly loop — RSVPs and attendance and member chat — along with events, competitions, a shop and email tools, in one subscription with a free tier and transparent pricing.

Built for volunteer committees rather than for one national market's league structure, and priced in your own currency.

Fair trade-offs, stated plainly: both Pitchero and Spond ship native app-store apps, while ClubHelix's mobile experience is an installable web app; Pitchero's UK league feeds and stats depth are real advantages for UK clubs in its heritage sports; and Spond's price is unbeatable if free comms is truly all you need. Where ClubHelix wins is when you'd otherwise be running both of the products in this article — one member database, one bill, and the website and the weekly organising finally in the same system. We've written up fuller comparisons at /compare if you want the direct head-to-heads (Pitchero, Spond).

To be clear: if this article has convinced you that Pitchero or Spond is the right fit for your club, pick it with our blessing — both are good products used happily by thousands of clubs. The point of a fair comparison is that you choose the right tool, not that you choose ours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Spond really free?

The organiser is: events, availability, messaging and payment collection carry no subscription. The exception, found when we re-checked in October 2026, is the Club Website, a paid Spond Club add-on at £19 + VAT a month (A$22, C$24 or €15) after a free trial. Beyond that, Spond's revenue comes from payment processing fees when clubs collect money through the app, and from its Superdraw fundraising product, where the club keeps 65% of ticket sales. If your club won't collect much money through Spond, it's effectively free; if you will, factor the processing side into your comparison.

Does Spond give my club a website?

It can now, for a fee. When we re-checked in October 2026, Spond sold a Club Website as a Spond Club feature, with customisable designs and your own domain, at £19 + VAT a month (A$22, C$24 or €15) after a free trial. That changes what used to be the biggest structural difference from Pitchero. The question is now whether a website added to an organiser covers what your club needs, or whether you want a platform built around the site. We haven't assessed the depth of Spond's site, so compare both on your own content before committing.

How much does Pitchero cost?

As at July 2026, Pitchero publishes a Free plan, Standard at £38 per month and Pro at £99 per month, with 30-day trials and annual-billing discounts. Online payments aren't available on the Free plan; on paid plans, processing fees range from 2.42% + 17p (Standard) down to 1.67% + 15p (Pro), so higher tiers earn a better payment rate.

Can a club use both Pitchero and Spond?

Yes, and many do — Spond for team-level availability and messaging, Pitchero (or another website platform) for the public site, membership and payments. It works, but you're maintaining two systems and two member lists, and re-keying between them is the hidden cost. If that duplication is wearing your volunteers down, that's exactly the situation an all-in-one platform exists to fix.

Do Pitchero and Spond work for clubs here?

Both function, but neither is built for this market. Pitchero prices in pounds by default, uses UK club vernacular throughout, and supports on UK hours; Spond's centre of gravity is the Nordics and its payment tooling was designed around European banking. Critically, neither integrates with league-mandated registration or background-screening systems, which for many youth clubs is the deciding factor. Weigh the North American platforms in the comparison too.
